RWD is Going Virtual for Summer 2020!
Updated: Jul 18, 2020
Read Write Discover has been a part of the community since 2006. For the past 13 years, we've partnered with libraries from San Jose to San Francisco, continuously growing and iterating to create the best program for our youth.
Coronavirus (COVID-19) is impacting our world, our country, and our community in an unprecedented way. With shelter-in-place and the closure of our schools, millions of students around the world are unable to complete their academic year. Colleges and universities have moved online and now practice distance learning. Some high school, middle school, and elementary classes have moved online, as well. However, there are a handful of folks that, unfortunately, do not have the resources to practice distance learning at home.
In March, when the Bay Area was put under a shelter-in-place order, we were a little hesitant to host a set of virtual tutoring programs. We didn't have the infrastructure, the bandwidth, or the resources to adapt to a virtual setting in two months. We've also never done this before -- our program has been squarely focused on intentional in-person interactions. After setting up a meeting with the RWD Leadership Team, the most important thing remains true -- this is the time for us to make a positive change in the lives of the youth in our community.
Summer learning loss is a challenge that Read Write Discover constantly works to combat each year. On average, if a student does not practice their skills, two months of reading are lost over the course of an average three-month summer break (Source). Social distancing and the closure of our schools began this March, many schools are not intending to start back up again until the Fall.
Although we are a completely volunteer-run program and we operate in a small pocket of the world, I am grateful and proud to call the RWD team my peers. This is a chance for us to make even the slightest difference to the youth in our community and continue to close the education gap.
We are still motivated and hopeful that we will be able to bring the most impactful literacy program to our communities. I am excited to officially announce that Read Write Discover will be hosting virtual tutoring programs during Summer 2020.

See you all in June :)
